Oil to Gas Price Calculator
What would a gallon of gas cost at $100 or $200 oil? Move the slider to see the US average pump price and what it is made of.
At $200 a barrel, US regular gasoline would cost about $6.32 a gallon on average, against about $3.23 at $70, if refining, distribution and taxes stayed at today's levels. Each $1 on a barrel adds about 2.4 cents a gallon, because a barrel holds 42 gallons.

How the estimate works
Pump price per gallon = crude price per barrel ÷ 42 + refining + distribution and marketing + taxes. The defaults come from EIA: in 2025 a gallon averaged $3.10, of which crude oil was 51.4%, refining 17.8%, distribution and marketing 15.9% and taxes 15.0%. Taxes default to the January 2026 average of federal (18.4¢) plus state (33.55¢) taxes and fees; pick California or Alaska, or enter your own.
Limits of the estimate
- Refining and distribution costs are held constant. In real oil spikes, refining margins often widen, so pump prices can rise more than shown.
- Pump prices lag crude by days to weeks, and vary by state, city, season and station.
- Some states also apply sales tax as a percentage of price; the tax input is a flat amount per gallon.
- This is arithmetic for education, not a forecast of oil or gasoline prices.

Frequently asked questions
How much would gas cost if oil hit $200 a barrel?
About $6.32 a gallon for the US average, using EIA's 2025 refining and distribution costs and January 2026 taxes, compared with about $3.23 at $70 oil. In a real spike refining margins usually widen too, so the pump price could be higher. This is arithmetic, not a forecast.
How much does a $1 rise in oil add to gas prices?
About 2.4 cents a gallon. A barrel holds 42 US gallons, so $1 more per barrel is $1 ÷ 42 ≈ 2.4 cents per gallon of crude cost, before any change in refining margins, distribution or taxes.
What share of the gas price is crude oil?
In 2025 crude oil was 51.4% of the average US retail price of regular gasoline ($3.10 a gallon), according to EIA. Refining was 17.8%, distribution and marketing 15.9% and federal and state taxes 15.0%. The shares move as crude prices change.
Has oil ever been $200 a barrel?
No. The record was about $147 in July 2008. See our Brent explainer for the price history.
Why don't pump prices follow oil prices immediately?
Retail prices lag crude by days to weeks, because stations sell fuel bought earlier and adjust gradually. Prices also tend to rise faster than they fall, and local supply, refinery outages and season (summer blends) move them independently of crude.
Which oil price should I use, Brent or WTI?
Either is a reasonable proxy: US refiners buy crude priced off both benchmarks, which usually trade within a few dollars of each other. The calculator only needs a dollars-per-barrel figure.
