Scenarios

Conditions, not price predictions

Bull case

If WTI price structure and US crude inventories stay supportive, the bullish scenario becomes more consistent with the data.

Assumptions

  • Inventories continue to draw or hold below recent levels.
  • Supply additions (US output, OPEC+) stay limited.
  • The dollar and financial conditions do not tighten sharply.

Supporting factors

  • WTI price structure (+6.14% vs 50-day avg)
  • US crude inventories (424.1 mb)
  • US dollar (broad index) (121.4)
  • US Treasury yields (5.22%)

Would be invalidated by

  • Cushing inventories (24.7 mb)
  • US crude production (13.98 mb/d)
  • Strategic Petroleum Reserve (283.0 mb)

Key catalysts

  • September 2026 CPI (14 Oct 2026)
  • EIA weekly petroleum report (week ending 9 Oct) (15 Oct 2026)
  • EIA weekly petroleum report (week ending 16 Oct) (21 Oct 2026)

Base case

The current regime (Neutral, score +17) persists while the factor mix stays broadly as it is.

Assumptions

  • No large surprise in the weekly EIA data.
  • No change in OPEC+ policy.
  • Macro data broadly in line with recent trends.

Supporting factors

  • WTI price structure (+6.14% vs 50-day avg)
  • US crude inventories (424.1 mb)
  • US dollar (broad index) (121.4)
  • US Treasury yields (5.22%)

Would be invalidated by

  • A move of 20+ points in the Marlin Score, which would change the regime band.

Key catalysts

  • September 2026 CPI (14 Oct 2026)
  • EIA weekly petroleum report (week ending 9 Oct) (15 Oct 2026)
  • EIA weekly petroleum report (week ending 16 Oct) (21 Oct 2026)

Bear case

If Cushing inventories and US crude production keep pressuring, the bearish scenario becomes more consistent with the data.

Assumptions

  • Inventories build, especially at Cushing.
  • Supply rises (US output or OPEC+ quota increases).
  • A stronger dollar or risk-off move in equities.

Supporting factors

  • Cushing inventories (24.7 mb)
  • US crude production (13.98 mb/d)
  • Strategic Petroleum Reserve (283.0 mb)

Would be invalidated by

  • WTI price structure (+6.14% vs 50-day avg)
  • US crude inventories (424.1 mb)
  • US dollar (broad index) (121.4)
  • US Treasury yields (5.22%)

Key catalysts

  • September 2026 CPI (14 Oct 2026)
  • EIA weekly petroleum report (week ending 9 Oct) (15 Oct 2026)
  • EIA weekly petroleum report (week ending 16 Oct) (21 Oct 2026)

About the Marlin Score

What is the Marlin Score?

A single number from -100 to +100 that summarises 15 WTI factors: inventories, Cushing, production, refinery runs, the SPR, WTI price structure, Brent and the Brent-WTI spread, the dollar, Treasury yields, OPEC+ supply, China demand, geopolitical risk, the futures curve and risk sentiment. Each factor is scored from -10 to +10 by a fixed, published rule and weighted.

What do the market regimes mean?

Bullish is a score of 60 or more, Moderately Bullish 20 to 59, Neutral -19 to 19, Moderately Bearish -59 to -20 and Bearish -60 or less. The regime describes the balance of the data, not where the price will go.

Is the Marlin Score a trading signal or a forecast?

No. It is a transparent summary of current supply, demand and macro data with sources and dates. It does not predict prices and is not a recommendation to buy or sell.

Where does the data come from and how often is it updated?

From the U.S. Energy Information Administration (prices, weekly inventories, production, refinery utilization, SPR) and the Federal Reserve via FRED (dollar index, Treasury yields), plus monthly OPEC+, China and geopolitical risk figures entered from their publishers. The dashboard refreshes several times each US trading day; weekly EIA data updates after each Wednesday report.

Why is a factor marked Data unavailable?

When a source has no current value, or the data would need a licence Marlin does not hold (for example futures prices), the factor is left out rather than estimated. The score is withheld if less than half of the total factor weight has data.

Every rule and weight: How the Marlin Score works. Weekly inventories: EIA report breakdown.
