What it is
The Consumer Price Index is the Bureau of Labor Statistics' measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. It is published monthly at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time for the previous month.
Markets that often watch it: Gold, Forex, US dollar.
How markets tend to use it
Analysis, not a forecast
- Markets usually react to the gap between the figure and what was expected, not to the level itself.
- For the US dollar and gold, the main channel is what the figure implies for Federal Reserve policy and real yields. That link is not stable; see our gold and real yields analysis.
- The Fed's 2% goal is defined with the PCE price index, not CPI, but CPI comes out earlier in the month and shapes expectations for PCE.
Before the release: a short checklist
- Note the release time in your own time zone (shown above).
- Mark recent highs and lows on the chart before 8:30 a.m. ET, not after.
- Decide your risk before the release: spreads can widen and prices can gap past stops.
- If you trade a funded account, check your firm's news rule for CPI first.
Size the trade for the stop you would actually use around a release with the position size calculator.
Trading CPI in a funded account?
Prop firms restrict trading around some news, but only in some phases and on some account types. What their own pages said on 23 Sep 2026:
- FTMO: FTMO's FAQ names CPI among its restricted events. On a Standard FTMO Account (not during the evaluation) there is a 2-minute window before and after it.
- FundedNext: no news adjustment in the Challenge. On Stellar funded accounts, only 40% of the profit from trades in the window is counted toward the account balance. Losses in the window count in full. Window: 5 minutes before to 5 minutes after listed high-impact news.
- FundingPips: on master accounts, profits from trades in a 5-minute window around high-impact news (10 minutes around speeches) may be deducted; purposely trading news is prohibited in all phases. High-impact events in the FundingPips Economic Calendar on the trader dashboard.
Rules change and differ by account type. VERIFY CURRENT DATA on the firm's own page before you trade.

Frequently asked questions
When is the next CPI release?
The BLS schedule lists the remaining 2026 CPI releases on 14 October (September data), 10 November (October data) and 10 December (November data), each at 8:30 a.m. ET. Check the BLS schedule for changes.
What time is CPI released?
8:30 a.m. US Eastern time. That is 12:30 UTC while the US is on daylight time and 13:30 UTC from 1 November 2026.
Is CPI the Fed's inflation target?
No. The Federal Reserve defines its 2% longer-run goal with the annual change in the PCE price index. CPI is published earlier and is watched as a guide.
Can I trade CPI in a prop firm account?
It depends on the firm and the phase. FTMO's FAQ lists CPI among restricted events for Standard FTMO Accounts, not during the evaluation. See our news trading rules comparison and check the firm's current rules.
