What it is
The Weekly Petroleum Status Report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration covers US crude oil and product inventories, refinery activity, imports and exports and production. Summary files are released after 10:30 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday and other materials after 1:00 p.m. In holiday weeks the release moves to Thursday at 12:00 p.m.

How markets tend to use it
Analysis, not a forecast
- Oil often reacts to the gap between the inventory change and what was expected, not to the raw number.
- Cushing, Oklahoma stocks matter for WTI because it is the delivery point for WTI futures.
- One week is noise; some weekly data are estimates and are revised later.
Before the release: a short checklist
- Check the EIA schedule for holiday weeks (15 October and 12 November 2026 are Thursday releases at 12:00 p.m. ET).
- Read the report in order: expectations, crude, refinery runs, products, trade, Cushing.
- If you trade a funded account, check your firm's news rule for crude inventories.

Trading EIA in a funded account?
Prop firms restrict trading around some news, but only in some phases and on some account types. What their own pages said on 23 Sep 2026:
- FTMO: FTMO's FAQ names Crude Oil Inventories among its restricted events. On a Standard FTMO Account (not during the evaluation) there is a 2-minute window before and after it.
- FundedNext: no news adjustment in the Challenge. On Stellar funded accounts, only 40% of the profit from trades in the window is counted toward the account balance. Losses in the window count in full. Window: 5 minutes before to 5 minutes after listed high-impact news.
- FundingPips: on master accounts, profits from trades in a 5-minute window around high-impact news (10 minutes around speeches) may be deducted; purposely trading news is prohibited in all phases. High-impact events in the FundingPips Economic Calendar on the trader dashboard.
