Oil headline days on a funded account: scheduled releases have windows, headlines do not
News rules at prop firms list scheduled releases such as the EIA oil report. A sudden headline has no window, so your stop, size and daily limit do the work.

Short answer
A firm's news rule covers the events on its calendar, such as the weekly EIA crude inventory report, which FTMO lists for a 2-minute window either side on a Standard FTMO Account. A sudden oil headline, for example about supply or the Gulf, is not on any calendar, so no window protects you: the stop at the broker, the size and your daily limit do. Read your firm's own page for how it treats other events.
Key takeaways
- Scheduled: the EIA weekly petroleum report follows EIA's published schedule. FTMO's help page lists Crude Oil Inventories among its restricted events on a Standard FTMO Account (2 minutes before and after); it does not apply in the Challenge or Verification phase.
- Unscheduled: a supply or geopolitical headline has no release time and no firm window. Whether a trade placed or closed during one breaks a rule depends on the firm's own terms; read them.
- What protects you on a headline day is yours: a stop at the broker before you enter, size from your risk, and a daily limit inside the firm's.
- Spreads can widen and fills can differ from the stop price in fast markets. Plan for a worse fill than the stop you drew.
Two kinds of oil move
Scheduled. The EIA weekly report comes out on a published schedule. Because the time is known, prop firms can write a rule around it: FTMO’s help page names Crude Oil Inventories among the restricted events on a Standard FTMO Account. See the EIA calendar page for the time and the news window checker for the windows your firm describes.
Unscheduled. A headline about supply, sanctions or the Gulf arrives at no set time. There is no release to put a window around, so a firm’s news rule does not tell you when to stay out. What the firm’s terms say about other events is for you to read on its own page. This note does not restate any price: for a live quote use a charting platform, and for official figures use the EIA.
A checklist for a headline day
- A stop at the broker before you enter. No stop, no trade: see Trade Gate.
- Size from the risk. 1% of the account is $50 on $5,000. Do not raise it because the move looks large.
- A daily limit inside the firm’s. Check the daily loss and max loss in the drawdown calculator.
- Plan for a worse fill. In a fast market the fill can be worse than the stop price and the spread wider than usual.
- Do not chase. If you missed the move, it is not your trade. See FOMO in trading.
What is scheduled next
The weekly oil inventory report is on the EIA calendar; check the date on the agency’s own schedule, as holiday weeks move it.
