Why this week matters (analysis)
The minutes are the main event. The minutes show the discussion behind the September decision: how officials weighed inflation against the labour market, and how much agreement there was. Markets read them for hints about the next steps. They are released three weeks after the meeting, so the reaction is usually smaller than on the decision day itself, but a change in tone can still move the dollar and gold.
A quiet week for data. Besides the minutes there is little scheduled that tends to move markets: the August trade balance and the weekly jobless claims. In our view the bigger test comes the week after, with September CPI on 14 October.
Oil has its usual Wednesday. The EIA report at 10:30 a.m. ET is the regular scheduled data point for WTI and Brent. See how to read the EIA inventory report. Note that the following week’s EIA report moves to Thursday 15 October at 12:00 p.m. ET because of the holiday on Monday 12 October.
Before you trade these releases
- Convert the times to your own time zone and mark them on your chart.
- The FOMC minutes come out at 2:00 p.m. ET, in the US afternoon and the evening in Europe. Plan for that if you hold positions overnight.
- On a funded account, check your firm’s news calendar. FTMO’s help page lists crude oil inventories among its examples of restricted events for the Standard FTMO Account. Compare the rules on our prop firm news rules page.
Publishers can change dates, and a lapse in federal funding can delay statistical releases, so check the agency pages on the day. VERIFY CURRENT DATA before trading any of these times.
