Trading the EIA Oil Report on a Funded Account: A Wednesday Checklist
Before the Wednesday EIA crude inventory report: what FTMO and FundingPips say about news windows, what counts as a violation, and a five-step checklist.
By Volodymyr Kravchenko Published Updated Data as of
Short answer
The EIA crude inventory report comes out on Wednesdays after 10:30 a.m. Eastern. FTMO's FAQ names Crude Oil Inventories among restricted events on a Standard FTMO Account: no opening or closing trades, including stop loss and take profit executions, from 2 minutes before to 2 minutes after. FundingPips Master accounts restrict a 5-minute window around high-impact events. Rules differ by account type and change, so read yours on the day.
Key takeaways
- A stop or target that triggers inside a restricted window can count as a violation, even if you opened the trade hours earlier.
- Whether the EIA report is restricted depends on the firm, the account type and the firm's own calendar.
- Check the firm's calendar on Wednesday morning, not this article: rules were last read on 23 September 2026.
The Wednesday checklist
- Know the time. The report comes out Wednesdays after 10:30 a.m. ET; check the EIA schedule in holiday weeks.
- Open your firm’s calendar (FTMO: “Restricted event”; FundingPips: the dashboard calendar) and see whether the report is listed for your account type.
- Look at open positions. Any stop loss or take profit that could trigger in the window is a risk. Close, move or accept it knowingly.
- Decide before, not during. No new orders or edits inside the window if your rules restrict it.
- Write the date you read the rules. Rules change; yesterday’s reading is not today’s.
The report itself, and how oil tends to react to it, is explained in How Oil Traders Read the EIA Report. The firms’ rules side by side are on prop firm news trading rules, size the trade with the WTI position size calculator, see the next windows in the news window checker, and you can get the EIA figures as a notification with the alerts on the oil hub.
How this was prepared
Checked 23 Sep 2026
Window lengths and consequences come from the firms' own FAQ and help pages listed below, read on 23 September 2026. Marlin did not verify them with the firms, and rules change: VERIFY CURRENT DATA on the firm's site before you trade. The checklist is Marlin analysis, not advice. No inventory figures are quoted. Facts are separated from analysis and opinion; anything that could not be verified against a current source is marked VERIFY CURRENT DATA. Read the full methodology and editorial policy.

Frequently asked questions
Can I trade oil during the EIA report on an FTMO account?
FTMO's FAQ says there is no news restriction during the Evaluation Process. On a Standard FTMO Account, Crude Oil Inventories is among the restricted events: no opening or closing trades, including pending orders and stop loss or take profit executions, from 2 minutes before to 2 minutes after the release, on the affected instruments. The Swing account type has no news restriction. Check FTMO's economic calendar for the event.
What about FundingPips?
On Master accounts FundingPips restricts a window around high-impact events in its own economic calendar (5 minutes before to 5 minutes after on most account types), and profits from trades opened or closed in the window may be deducted. The help page does not say whether the EIA report is in that calendar, so check the calendar on your dashboard.
Does a stop loss that triggers during the window count?
At FTMO, yes: a stop or target triggered inside the window is described as a violation, even for a position opened earlier. Move or close the position before the window, or size it so that you are fine with that risk.
When is the EIA report released?
Wednesdays after 10:30 a.m. Eastern time, one day later in some holiday weeks. See the EIA schedule.
